Our beloved Brother Richard J. Dix, S.M. (B.S. ’52), passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, at the age of 92 with 75 years of religious profession. Brother Dix lived an active life as a teacher and administrator. In retirement, he continued to be active, living in the Marianist Residence doing maintenance and renovation projects and going for a daily swim in the campus pool.
However, Brother Dix’s history with St. Mary’s is much deeper. He served as the University’s Registrar for 10 years, retiring in 1995 to assume his appointment to the Provincial Council in St. Louis, Missouri. He was named a Trustee Emeritus in 2018 for his service of 26 years as a member of the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees — 1976 to 1986, 1993 to 2001, and 2002 to 2010.
Brother Dix took pride in his leadership roles, including helping to manage the Marianist Trust Fund and volunteering his time and expertise to help Pedro Viyao, a former Trustee, and his wife, Alicia, which led to the establishment of an endowed scholarship. Both endowments continue today to support St. Mary’s students.
