Special Treatment Illuminations in The Saint John's Bible
with Guest Speaker
Diane Von Arx
A prominent calligrapher in Minnesota, closely involved in the creation of the The Saint John's Bible
March 2, 1016
The lecture should be of special interest to those seeking to more
fully understand the story behind the Bible and the reasoning behind its
diverse illuminations. Von Arx's lecture will be followed by a Q&A
session and dessert reception.
The Escobedo Saint John's Bible
Lecture Series is made possible by the generous gift of Ruben (B.B.A.
'60) and Veronica Escobedo. Lectures are free and open to the public.
Those traveling to campus are asked to park in Lot D near the NW 36th
St. entrance, or in Lot H, near the Culebra Rd. entrance. The Saint John’s Bible, the world’s newest handwritten,
hand-illuminated bible, was commissioned in 1998 by the Benedictine monks of
Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and is the first such
bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey since the advent of the printing
press more than 550 years ago. The Heritage Edition, acquired by St. Mary's University, is a numbered, full-scale
fine art reproduction of the original.
