FR JOSEPH UVIETTA S.M.
Fr. Joseph first met the Marianists at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, TX. He made his First Vows on August 15, 1950, and pronounced his Perpetual Vows on July 17, 1954, both at Marynook in Galesville, WI. Fr. Joe studied at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History (1952). In 1958 he began seminary studies at Regina Mundi University in Fribourg, Switzerland, leading up to a Doctorate in Ministry Degree in 1961. That same year he was ordained on July 16.
Having grown up in a close-knit Italian family, he was attracted to the Marianists because of their strong Mary-style family spirit. "The Brothers of Mary not only cared for the people they served, but they also cared for each other." His family was raised in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood and parish. St. Agnes, a poor parish, had a three-room school with outstanding educators in the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and Sisters of the Incarnate Word.
Following his studies at St. Mary's University, he became a high school teacher with many extra-curricular responsibilities. After ordination he returned as chaplain/teacher in high schools, but soon received the first of several calls to "new careers" in formation and administration. Over the years he served as Novice Master, Province Assistant for Religious Life, Provincial, Principal, Retreat House Director and Chaplain to communities of retired Sisters. He served for many years in the St. Louis area before moving in 2018 to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio.
He has one brother; Albert (Carolyn-deceased), three sisters: Melba Fisher (Dan-deceased), Norma Klar (Marvin-deceased), Rosa Hawkins, a cousin: Bernice Gianotti, and numerous nieces and nephews.
