Theologian John F. Haught, Ph.D., will lead a St. Mary’s University audience through a discussion of whether Darwinian evolution can be compatible with Christian faith on Wednesday, Nov. 7.
Haught will present “Evolution and Faith: What is at Stake?” as part of the MacTaggart Catholic Intellectual Tradition Lecture Series at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the University Center, Conference Room A. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Haught — Distinguished Research Professor of Theology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. — will explore the reasons why almost half of Christians in the United States reject evolution and why many biologists espouse atheism. His lecture will also discuss how Christian thinkers, including Catholics, attempt to reconcile evolution with their faith.
Haught specializes in Systematic Theology. He has a particular interest in issues pertaining to science, cosmology, evolution, ecology and religion. He has written 20 books, most recently “The New Cosmic Story: Inside Our Awakening Universe” and “Resting on the Future: Catholic Theology for an Unfinished Universe.”
This free, annual lecture series features men and women who have shaped the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, which is at the heart of the educational experience at St. Mary’s. The theme for 2018’s lectures is Faith and Science.
