Bro. Joseph Barrett died on Tuesday, August 7, 2018. He was 93 years of age with 75 years of Marianist life. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA and moved with his family to Detroit, MI. There he attended Holy Redeemer Grade School and High School and met the Marianists.
Bro. Joe was a gifted educator and counselor and served at a number of Marianist institutions: Central Catholic H.S., San Antonio, TX; St. Michael's H.S., Chicago, IL; Chaminade Prep, St. Louis, MO.; and Don Bosco H.S., Milwaukee, WI. He spent a few years in vocation and formation ministry for the Marianists. He spent 20 years at Gross H.S. in Omaha, which became a special place for him. His presence continues to affect the Gross School community. He served at St. Mary's University in San Antonio and formation work for the Marianists from 1992 until he retired to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio in 2004.
His immediate relatives are sister, Mrs. Ann Brady, Dearborn, MI; nephews, John Brady, Livonia, MI and Tim Brady, Nashville, TN; niece, Maureen Leonard, Farmington Hills, MI; and long-time friend, Mrs. Eileen Cullen, Erie, PA. Bro. Joe leaves a number of grand nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends and acquaintances who were touched by his goodness.
FUNERAL SERVICES
There will be a viewing at 6:00 PM, Thursday, August 16 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel at St. Mary's University, followed by the Rosary at 7:00 PM.
On Friday, August 17, there will be a viewing at 4:00 PM and a Mass of Christian Burial at 5:00 PM in Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel followed by interment in the Marianist Cemetery.
A social and reception will follow in University Center.
